Happy New Year from Wild Basin

Tom and I celebrated a glorious day in Wild Basin, Rocky Mountain National Park, X-mas 2009. With few tracks before us on a still windless day, we wound our way from Copeland Lake to the ranger station surrounded by snow-clad peaks and pines, with the first hint of blue skies in days peaking thru. Exhillerating, and especially so, to think of the long way I'd come since my October "fog," hooked up to oxygen, lung tubes, and feeding tubes.

I know I couldn't have emerged into such sweet sunlight without each of you: your compassion and support (as well as the daily walks in nature) have made all the difference in my healing. I know gratitude on such a deep level - it defies words.

Today marks the anniversary of my beloved sister Lee's passing and my mother's birthday. I will do my best to honor them, looking for their grace in the signs of nature as I take to another trail.

Happy New Year to All of YOU, who make such a difference in my life, jude

Happy Holdiays and New Year!!

With the New Year approaching I thought Id just send a quick update. I am amazed at Judy's strength through the last few weeks! She is having chemo weekly in Boulder and last week it was so warm and sunny we went for a marathon walk after chemo and some Holiday shopping! I am serious when I say she was hard to keep up with! Yesterday we walked in Wild Basin in RMNP and even though it was very cold the trees sheltered us from any winds and it was very beautiful with a bit of fresh snow! Judy is also working from home again which really lifts her spirits as she loves her work! I just feel more great things are coming her way in 2010!! Happy New Year to everyone!! Patty S.

Thanksgiving

Judy had a nice Thanksgiving with her boys at Biffs. She made such an amazing challa dressing, there were no leftovers. Judy has been doing well with her new PICC line, IV antibiotics and continued TPN (Total Protein Nutrition) at night. She's keeping up with her daily, soul-filling walks and uplifting phone calls she gets from you, her fans. Judy's next chemo treatment is this Monday, Nov. 30 so keep the love coming this week! Judy continues to gain strength and her lungs have responded so well. She is still on (some) oxygen up here in Estes Park. Again, she thanks you profusely for all the encouragment and well wishes.

Skinny What?

Jude is considering a new career in the Kitchen and cherishes her new guide and apron.

BVH slumber party

I crashed the overnight party at Jude's 5 star hotel room at Bouder Valley Hospital and was lucky to have my trusty iPhone to click some pics. Claudia Paterno and Lindsey Landers joined Jude in charades, Baileys Irish Cream milkshakes and laughter galore.

Estes Park 43 Visitors 14 - spearheaded by Hayden Baird

Estes Park sports teams continue to strike fear in the minds and hearts of opposing teams, state wide. Golf, Football, Baseball and currently Basketball continue to thrive in this small mountain community - in part due to the devoted and relentless coaching efforts of Tony Salerno.

a website established for Hayden's teams with the intent of them updating content is available at:

After a pretty rough weekend, Judy had a great day today. She treated me to Starbucks and we went for a walk along the Estes Park river walk. It was a warm and calm day and Judy really enjoyed the fresh air and I so much enjoyed the time with her! Keep up the good work Judy and we'll be swimming laps soon! Patty S.

Jude's 1st chemo treatment went well and she has been in good spirits. She slept through the night getting up only once and woke up at 7am for a short time. On the mend she is with an expectation of a walk - try to not let her overdo the walks.

Hi all - I just wanted to pass along some great updates... info I've received from friends and family. I did talk to Jude this morning; she sounded so positive and strong, but a bit winded from climbing stairs at home in EP. She was on her way out for a walk on the lake path, and was hoping to walk for a whole hour today, so it sounds like she is getting strong!

Aside from help from friends and family (thanks Don for being so supportive and helpful!), Jude feels blessed to have support from her awesome boys... Bridger has been staying with her in Little Valley and helping with the logistics, and Hayden orchestrated a great supprise for his mom when Jude attended his basketball game last night! I wasn't there, but sounds like it was just uplifting to see all of the boys with pink socks and sweatbands, and hearing the "go Judy" cheer at timeouts! It was really touching for Judy, so thanks everyone involved in that one, which included posters of support and lots of parents/friends wearing pink ribbons.

I hope to see Judy in Boulder Fri during her chemotherapy, to give her some things from the office (but only the good stuff), and to chat or just sit together... We all hope that everything goes smoothly during the first chemo treatment!

Thanks to all of your supporters... when I talk to Jude, she always asks me to relay her appreciation to all of you...

wooh hooo! just in time for sunshine and Halloween

Jude is being released from Rose Medical late Saturday afternoon and should be home after 5pm. Not to say that she will be wanting visitors for a couple of days as Don will be there and you can imagine how exhausting just getting into a car, driving up the canyon and getting into the house, with stairs and all will be.

Great caring and thoughtful job to the Denver Family Team Judy - Jane, Lindsey, Lisa, Amy, Howe, Derek, Nico and everyone else I might have not mentioned.

GoTeamJudy - Estes Park division - YOUR UP TO BAT n "We all want homeruns"!

love, Thomas Howard

10.30.09
My mother, Ann, and I visited a robust and increasingly fiesty Judy this morning - she's loads better and looking forward to getting back up the hill, possibly tomorrow. J is looking forward to brother-in-law Don's visit tomorrow and seems to be taking things more into her own hands.
Walks down Fish Creek, enjoying her beautiful home, and seeing her boys are what she's looking forward to right now.
Her message to us?
Thanks for the smoothies, company, and Love!

Talked with Judy yesterday, she sounded very strong and upbeat! Also, very hopeful for possibly going home to Estes this weekend!! That would be so wonderful and an answer to so many prayers! Keep up the good work Judy, see you this afternoon!! Patty S.

Hi - just talked to Jude on the phone... I won't make it in because of the snow. She sounded tired, and when I asked what she was eating for breakfast, she said that she can't eat... :(
How to get her to eat?! She still has chest drain tubes in; she thought they might come out today, as they were talking about taking them out yesterday... I told her I'd call back later today to see how she's feeling. I'm trying to surround Jude with my prayers right now, on this cold and snowy and beautiful day... Lisa

Judy was moved up to the 6th floor over the weekend! When I walked in to her rooom at about 11 am, she was up in the chair, wearing her own PJs (!), and drinking a jamba juice smoothie... now that's progress! Jude had just taken 4 vigorous laps, and did some standing exercises. She ate a hard boiled egg, about 1/3 cup of manderine oranges, and a few bites of chicken; I can tell that Judy is trying hard to eat a bit more every time (she raved over the quiche yesterday :)

Bonnie Frank, a RN who is managing the transition for Judy to go home... maybe as early as the end of this week. Bonnie will be looking into home health care, ect; I was very impressed. Dr. Danato came in while Bonnie was there; he was encouraged with Jude's progress, and was very stern with his direction to Judy... she must eat more, or he can not release her. Dr. Danato thinks that they may remove the chest drain tubes in a day or two.

Jude was up for 2 more laps before settling in bed to read the newspaper, and do her cross-word...by and large a very good morning/early afternoon today! Keep sending the great thoughts, and energy surges to Jude!

Patty S. and I had a delightful visit with Judy this afternoon, directly on the heals of Nico. Judy's color and smile have returned! We shared lots of great stories of people and places and she enjoyed the beautiful and haunting music video "One Day" from Matisyahu. She took four more laps around the nurses station at an excellent clip and even ate four healthy bites of spinach quiche! Go Judy Go! Jane, the forester.

Hi all - it's almost 8 am, and Judy is peacfully sleeping...I've been here since 7:30, sleeping when I arrived, so just doing some work in the waiting room. Thanks for the incredible GRCA pics! I spent a few hours with Jude yesterday, too. She is getting stronger, and really wants to improve; we set up a dry erase board to track what she had done every day (walking, eating, breathing, sitting up).
I don't know if it's the med.s or Judy-ness, but she is very focused on consuming protien... protien shakes and salmon seem to be her objectives! She choked down about 2 oz of banana protien smoothie, and told me that it was f---in' slimey! Her doc.s were looking into an appetite stimulus, in the pill form.
Hey! the girl's awake, so I'm off to feed her a smoothie and chat... more later!

Grand Canyon photos

Here's some more Grand Canyon photos, these are mainly National Canyon that Judy hiked/climbed with me. The last photo is Lava rapid, the biggest rapid on the trip. I'm so glad to have shared this trip to such a magical place with you Jude--I hope you heal well and we can do more hikes in the future.

Grand Photos - Judy living her dream...

Judy,
You never even told me you were sick! Even so you have way more energy than I ever did. Wishing you well and back on the river. Suep

Judy!!!!! What am I going to do with the big bowl of salad I made you? Didn't know you weren't home, sad to hear that you're still being held captive in the hospital. Come home soon!!!!!

Hi Judy fans! I spent about an hour with Judy this afternoon. Judy is improving! She walked several times today, sat up, and even ate a few spoons of soup and jello (but thankfully not at the same time!).
Judy has lots of work to do before going home... so if you visit or talk to her, please continue to encourage her. She has breathing exercises, walks, sitting up in a chair, eating and drinking... all of which must be completed frequently, in order to improve enough to be released.
Howe brought Judy some thai soup, which she had a few bites of... she's enjoying his presence and good music. Thomas keeps encouraging Judy, and providing Chaco-updates.
I believe that today was a better day than yesterday, and that tomorrow will be even better. Thanks for all of your great vibes for Jude... that energy is clearly helping her!

hi all - i saw Judy this afternoon... she is now in the intermediate care section. Jude had a procedure this morning to replace a tube, so she was mostly sleeping off the anesthesia. She was also visited by a touch theraphy/healer which seems to relax her, which is great. I only stayed for a few minutes...just long enough to say hello, and rub her feet a bit. Amy leaves tonight after a full week of outstanding care... Thank you a million times over, Amy! Howe should be at Rose now with Judy, and Kayci stopped in this afternoon, too. Judy had other visitors today as well; I didn't get to talk to all of them, but I'm sure that their presence was helpful!

So, Judy is understandably weak right now, after two major surgeries, and a procedure this morning. What I think she needs right now is a huge surge of love and energy... your prayers/thoughts/cards/calls/visits will really carry her through this phase, and get her out of the hospital, and back home! Thanks for all of your efforts; I know that you are helping her!

I'll try to see Judy tomorrow as well, so more updates will be coming from me... if you visit or call or want to share some info about Judy here, follow the info on one of the posts (thanks Thomas!)... use passcode Chaco123.

Happy to report that Hayden and team won against Lyons last night in nail-biting overtime 26-20. Whoever sees Judy, let her know the good news.
This was from Jane yesterda (10-13-2009):
After an uncomfortable morning Jude had fluid removed from around her lungs and abdomen. The doctor now believes that she has a leak in her small bowel or colon. She is in surgery now which is supposed to take about one hour. The doctor is very confident and believes the surgery will be successful. Derek and I will report right after surgery.
Thanks Nico for setting up the GoTeamJudy calander! what a great tool to make sure the bases are covered.

Thanks, Jane for the update... for those of you that didn't hear, Judy had a second surgery last night to remove some fluid, and alleviate pain in chest/abdomen.

I'm in Golden, about 20-30 minutes to Rose Medical, so please call if you need anything (303-279-1570 hm; 303-803-4749 cell).
